Shamrock Highlands Thoroughbreds started first as a concept of race horse ownership combining all the strengths of established partnerships with a broader vision of ownership going beyond a single stable or region.

Founding partner Jeff Callan established contacts and purchased ownership shares in disparate regions with highly qualified trainers, but working from his experiences both as a trainer, an owner, and a businessman, he realized he could link his growing network of contacts in a way that could not only benefit him as an owner and investor, but other prospective owners and enthusiasts seeking the experience of thoroughbred racing.

With a lifetime of experience in horse breeding and training all over the world, founding partner Barry Kirkham is a bloodstock agent and horse breeder based in Ocala, FL. Combining his experiences as a jockey and trainer along with his extensive expertise in breeding, Barry brings a broad perspective, an eye for winning pedigrees, and industry-grounded strengths to the foundation of the partnership.

Combining just the right amount of similarities and differences, your managing partners are here to nurture the success of your properties and a sustainable growth of the partnership that will create broader opportunities for investment.

Shamrock Highlands Founder and Managing Partner

Jeff Callan has a long history in racing horses and business management. Starting in Harness Racing in the 1980s in Ohio, Michigan and Illinois, Jeff was an owner, breeder, trainer and Q level driver driving qualifying races as well as county fair races. Although a small, family-owned business, his experience was hands-on in all phases and required his full attention to every phase of the business, including care, nutrition, training and racing.

On the thoroughbred side of racing, Jeff has spent the last 15 years studying pedigrees and breeding statistics as well as following successful horses through their careers, watching and analyzing tens of thousands of races.

A typical morning starts at 5 AM, reviewing the major tracks and paying special attention to Maidens and NW races, analyzing and replaying each detail for future reference while looking for the early hidden signs of forward performance.

In the business world, Jeff held such positions as Plant Manager, Engineering Manager, and Quality Manager in the automotive industry, and has run a successful consulting company since 2002, helping automotive and heavy truck suppliers all over the world in achieving operational excellence and top-class quality performance. In almost two decades, all of his client companies were repeat customers or proud referrals because of his reputation in the industry.

In this, like his racing and ownership endeavors, he is “boots on the ground” and involved in the fine detail work that splits the difference between ‘good’ and ‘exceptional’.

Barry Kirkham has been racing most of his life. He began jockeying in Australia and Australasia the early 1970s, also racing in Europe and North America, building a literally cosmopolitan career and accruing experience in the sport on multiple continents.

After retiring from jockeying, Barry took his experiences in the saddle to training and exercise riding, training for locations all over North America and at one point lending his skills to the Stronach Group at their Toronto base.

Barry's traveled familiarity with the racing world and his years of direct hands-on experience as a jockey has given him strong insight in the attributes that make a horse a success. For the last 25 years, Barry has augmented those insights through his work as a bloodstock agent, studying pedigrees and breeding horses.

The warm weather and year-round full operability of Florida made it an attractive place to set up shop for himself as an owner, trainer, and bloodstock agent. He's currently centered in Ocala, Florida, where he breeds, raises and trains, focusing his abilities on spotting and building up talent.
